Literature is an imaginative work that is closely related to all aspects of life and aims to provide an indirect understanding of society. To explore the meaning, an in-depth study is needed, including the psychological aspects. The study of psychological aspects in this study was carried out by looking at literature as an autonomous entity, focused on psychological elements as a description of the fictional character's personality contained in the work. This study uses a psychological approach by referring to Jung's analytical psychology theory which emphasizes the importance of the unconscious aspect, in addition to consciousness, in forming a whole person. This theory is relevant to the personality condition of the main character who is dominated by unconscious aspects, namely the emergence of past memories, fantasies and teleological dreams. To deepen the analysis, supporting theories are used, namely existential psychology, religious psychology, and Javanese psychology.
The focus of this research is (1) what internal factors drive the personality dynamics of the main character, (2) what external factors drive the personality dynamics of the main character, (3) how the progression of the main character's personality, and (4) ) how to regress the main character's personality.
This study used a qualitative research design with the hermeneutic method. Overall data analysis makes use of interpretation by presenting it in the form of a description. Researchers act as key instruments, namely acting as planners, data collectors, data analyzers and interpreters, as well as reporters of research results. The data source is novel Hubbu Mashuri's work published by PT. Gramedia Pustaka Utama, first printing: August 2007. The research data is in the form of text units contained in the novel.
From the results of this study it can be argued that the internal factors driving the dynamics of the main character's personality are psychic energy (libido) in the form of encouragement (drive) and will (will) which are dynamic and work simultaneously toward personal wholeness. Encouragement includes (1) a curiosity urge which raises the desire to seek knowledge and forms a knowledgeable and humble personality, (2) the urge to love which causes the desire to love in the form of sexual love, eros, philia, and agape and forming a personality full of love and concern, and (3) a religious drive that generates a desire to serve God and forms a personality that has a deep religious sense, while the will in the form of a desire to be oneself which raises obsessions and ideals and forms a personality that full of motivation on life goals.
External factors driving the dynamics of the main character's personality are (1) the social environment in the pesantren which includes (a) family figures and the socio-cultural conditions of the pesantren, and (2) the social environment outside the pesantren which includes Javanese culture (Kejawen) and modern culture. The family figure forms the main character's personality who tends to be hard on himself, enlivens the grandfather figure in himself, and is calmer in dealing with problems. The socio-cultural conditions of the pesantren include (1) a hard madrasah education system as the foundation for religious education, and (2) the pesantren tradition that creates inner conflicts due to expectations as a successor and anti Kejawen against the will of the main character. Javanese culture or Kejawen resulting in the personality of the main character who is influenced by Javanese mysticism and obsessed with building harmony between Islam and Java, while modern culture becomes a challenge to measure one's own abilities.
The personality progression of the main character shows the two dominant personality types in the main character, namely the feeling extraver and taste introvert. Taste type extraver seen in (1) being open to knowledge which is influenced by the urge of curiosity and the willingness to be yourself and (2) wide association due to the urge of love agape, while the taste type introvert seen in (1) self-limiting attitudes in social interaction in pesantren which are influenced by the willingness to be oneself and (2) selective attitudes towards modern culture which are influenced by religious encouragement.
The personality regression of the main character can be seen from the active personal unconscious in the form of a complex containing past memories and a collective unconscious in the form of a manifestation of archetypes in the form of fantasy and teleological dreams. Past memories create inner conflict as well as serve as a means of self-introspection. The fantasy of the main character serves as (1) a way to escape from the situation he is in, namely the release of sexual pressure, and (2) an effort to reach forward, namely an obsession with Kejawen and the will to be free to be yourself. Teleological dreams include (1) coded messages about the signs of someone dying, and (2) containing archetypes wise old man which is a signal for the way of life to be taken, guidelines for strengthening steps to be yourself, solutions to various problems faced, and as a stepping stone to rediscover one's identity.
Based on the results of the study, it is suggested, among others (1) the results of research on the dynamics of fictional characters' personalities in literary works can be used as a source of knowledge to open the insights of character-based education actors in order to understand the unique and dynamic individual personalities, and (2) assessment of psychological aspects of Indonesian literary works need to consider references to original Indonesian theories or theories relevant to the "Eastern" tradition so that they can give a distinctive color in the world literature scene.
