COPING STRATEGIES FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING ANXIETY: THE CASE OF SUCCESSFUL EFL LEARNERS IN INDONESIA

Research problems:

  1. What are the coping strategies employed by the successful EFL learners in five phases; during preparation, before speech delivery, during speech delivery, after competitions failures, and in regular activities?
  2. How do the coping strategies employed by the successful EFL learners equal across different individuals and different phases; during preparation, before speech delivery, during speech delivery, after competitions failures, and in regular activities?
  3. How do the coping strategies employed by the successful EFL learners differ across different individuals and different phases; during preparation, before speech delivery, during speech delivery, after competitions failures, and in regular activities?

Objective:

This present study aims to investigate successful EFL learners’ coping strategies for public speaking anxiety. It is a qualitative in nature that collects the coping strategies in five phases; during preparation, before speech delivery, during speech delivery, after competitions failures, and in regular activities.

Significance:

The findings of this study may help EFL learners to cope with public speaking anxiety. By employing the coping strategies found in this study, EFL learners can be more successful to perform the language and reduce their anxiety to speak in public. Successful EFL learners can be mentors to train their coping strategies to other learners to cope with their public speaking anxiety.

BIODATA

Rosmala Adi Wijayanti was born on August 21st, 1991 in Pasuruan. She is the last child of Kuwadi and Sulistiani. She has an older brother and a sister, Rossi and Rossalina. She graduated from SDN Purwosari 1 in 2004. She continued her study to SMPN 1 Purwosari and graduated in 2007. Three years after that, she graduated from SMAN 1 Lawang. Furthermore, in 2014, she received her bachelor degree in State University of Malang. Then, she applied to study in English Language Teaching for her graduate program in the same university.

During her college time, she also teaches Basic English in elementary school and in private courses. These experiences bring her to be more interested in second language acquisition and the role of affective variables in learning especially anxiety in speaking. She hopes that this study can satisfy her curiosity and it contributes valuably to make her better as a learner and teacher as well.
