Acts of Requesting Employed by Indonesian ESP Lecturers
Research problem
The present study is carried out to answer the following questions:
- What strategies do Indonesian ESP lecturers apply in their request realizations?
- How do situational variables influence Indonesian ESP lecturers’ request strategies?
- What are Indonesian ESP lecturers’ reasons in using their request strategies?
Objective:
The present study is aimed at delineating acts of requesting employed by Indonesian ESP lecturers. It divided into three areas: request strategies, the influence of situational variables, and the reasons in using the request strategies.
Significance:
The findings from this study may help to raise the ESP lecturers’ awareness of the importance of pragmatic competence leading to their incorporation of this area into their teaching practices. The findings of this study may recommend the speech acts to be used as input enhancement in developing pragmatic competence in the classroom.

CURRICULUM VITAE
Arif Nugroho was born in Surakarta on May 16th 1992 and raised in that city which people often call as “The Spirit of Java”. He is the eldest son of two children. He has a brother named Adenin Raditya Diandra. His father, Sudarmadi is a sport teacher, while his mother, Darini is a housewife. His parents are very supportive and always encourage him to study and work hard in order to get what he really wants. Actually he is interested in politics and history. However, because of his parents’ encouragement to become an educator, he decided to continue his study in School of Teacher Training and Education. After graduated from SMAN 1 Baturetno, he studied English language teaching program and earned his undergraduate degree from Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in 2014. He wants to be an inspiring educator for his students and contributes to the development of his country. While studying in senior high school and university, he joined some organizations. His organization careers are (1) Ministry of home affairs of Students Executive Council of FKIP UMS in 2013, (2) Human Resource and Development of Saturday English Gathering of UMS in 2013, (3) the chief of Bidang Kemahasiswaan dan Pengabdian Masyarakat of English Department Students Organization (EDSO) UMS in 2012, and (4) the second chairman of Intra-School Student Organization of SMA N 1 Baturetno in 2009. The boy who graduated from SMPN 2 Baturetno and SDN 2 Ngancar likes to play football and travelling in his spare time. He is very interested in applied linguistics especially pragmatics in English language teaching. Currently, he is an ESP lecturer at University of Muhammadiyah Malang since 2015.
