DEVELOPING TASK-BASED MATERIALS FOR EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM ON SPEAKING
Improving learners’ communication skills is not an easy job for teachers. One effective way to solve this problem is by providing extracurricular program on speaking. SMAK Untung Suropati Sidoarjo is a school which applies an additional English lesson in its school based curriculum. The name of the additional lesson is “Speaking Extracurricular Program.” However, implementing this program has its own problems. One of the problems is that there are no particular learning materials which are specially designed for this program that can be used either by the teachers or by the students. Therefore, it is necessary that an instructional material to be developed.
In developing the materials, I adopt Willis’ (1996) model of phases and components of task-based learning. She uses the format of Pre-Task, Task Cycle and Language Focus. In other words, she focuses on forms at the end of task cycle which demonstrates that although form is important, it is not the central part of the task model. All in all, her model moves from fluency to accuracy and fluency again.
Since this study is limited only to the development of printed and recorded materials for the extracurricular program on speaking in SMAK Untung Suropati Sidoarjo, then it belongs to a small-scale R & D project. In developing the material, I adapt the model of R & D from Gall, Gall, and Borg (2003). As they suggest that if we plan to do an R & D project for a thesis or dissertation, it is best to undertake a small-scale project that involves a limited amount of original instructional design.
The materials which were developed by using the development concept of Gall et. al. (2003) obtained positive comments from the students and the teacher since they can motivate students to learn speaking in the target language. They present tasks and practices to make students confident to speak. It is due to the fact that the developed materials have been developed based on the students’ needs and validated both on contents and applicability. They also have accommodated the suggestions from the experts and students and also teacher as users.
The developed materials provide enough practices and tasks that are beneficial for both students and teacher. The various tasks and exercises help students to improve their speaking competence as well as their speaking performance. The weakness of the developed materials laid on the time allotment. Based on the findings during the try out, the teacher could not set the exact time allotment for each task since she could not predict the duration of time the students needed to do the task.
The materials function as alternative solution to the problem of the extracurricular program on speaking in SMAK Untung Suropati Sidoarjo as well as to create better instruction and bring on a more organized teaching and learning process for the program. The developed materials can be used by the members of extracurricular program on speaking in SMAK Untung Suropati Sidoarjo and can be adopted by other senior high school with similar program.
